5 ways to become a more effective job hunter

Whether you’re just starting out in your career or are already an experienced industry professional, there are a number of things you need to get right when looking for a new job. We outline some of the key areas to fine-tune your job search strategy.

Update your CV

Whether emailing a recruiter or applying for a job online, you need to have a document that’s ready to go. Yet many professionals forget to update their CVs. Remember of course that you will need tailor it for the role in question, but make sure you have your latest version ready. You’re learning and adding new skills constantly to your repertoire, so make sure you’re not selling yourself short.

Target your industry

You need to be very focused when applying for jobs in your chosen sector. Apart from quantifying your achievements and making sure your personal statement is thorough, you must also keep up with industry trends. Do you know which companies in your sector are hiring and the specific skills they’re looking for? Are you reading the trade magazines, press releases, social media posts etc. to learn about latest trends? The more knowledge you have, the more you’ll be able to impress at interview*.

Get comfortable networking

Networking can bring a lot of dread to some people yet it’s one of the most effective ways to land a job. But, more importantly, it’s where you’ll discover those priceless hidden job opportunities that never get advertised. Do some research and contact decision makers – better still, get out there and attend industry conferences and events. Once you start going to some events, you’ll become more confident and it won’t be so daunting. It just takes some practice and willingness to put yourself out there.

Incorporate social media

Is your LinkedIn profile up to the mark? As the premier professional networking site, rest assured that employers will check your LI profile. So make sure that all your experience is well presented, you have a professional photo on your profile, so you look the part! Have you thought about blogging? Are you sharing industry updates? Potential employers will look at your activity too, so make sure you’re doing everything you can to come across as a subject matter expert.

Job hunting needs to be taken seriously, so spend time on it as you would any other skill you’re trying to improve. And don’t forget to update your CV as you go along!

*Post-interview bonus tip: always ask for feedback and thank the interviewer(s).
