Luxembourg Banking Jobs Reach Their Highest Level in 14 Years

Luxembourg's banking sector is hiring again

Luxembourg's banking industry is sending an interesting signal.

According to the latest data from the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, credit institutions employed 26,560 people as of June 2026, up from 26,490 at the end of March and 26,284 at the end of 2025.

The latest figures therefore reinforce a trend already visible earlier this year: employment in Luxembourg's banking sector is continuing to grow, while the industry itself is becoming increasingly specialised.

The increase comes at a time when Luxembourg's banking landscape is undergoing significant change. New institutions are entering the market, established banks are transforming their operating models and regulatory, technological and digital developments are creating demand for increasingly specialised skills.

For employers, the figures therefore tell a broader story than simple job creation.

They point towards a banking talent market that is evolving.

Banking employment in Luxembourg is reaching levels not seen since 2012

The recent increase in employment comes against an interesting historical backdrop.

Luxembourg had 147 banks in 2010, according to the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF). By the end of 2024, that number had fallen to 115 following years of consolidation across European banking.

But the trend shifted slightly in 2025. At the end of the year, Luxembourg counted 116 banks, with combined balance sheet assets reaching almost €959 billion

The number of institutions remains significantly below the levels seen fifteen years ago, but the sector continues to generate highly qualified employment and attract new banking activities.

The market is not simply becoming larger. Its composition is changing.

New banks and financial institutions are choosing Luxembourg

The evolution of banking employment in Luxembourg coincides with renewed activity across the country’s wider financial ecosystem.

According to Luxembourg for Finance, Luxembourg’s financial supervisors authorised more than 58 new entities in 2025 across banking, asset management, payments, insurance and digital finance.

Among them were three new banks: Cecabank, FundBank and Rothschild & Co Wealth Management

The momentum has continued into 2026. In May, Lloyds Banking Group announced the opening of a new Luxembourg office to strengthen its European Corporate & Institutional Banking activities.

The operation provides lending, financing and core banking services, with a particular focus on financial sponsors and fund structures headquartered or domiciled in Luxembourg.

Another recent entrant illustrates how the boundaries between banking and fintech are evolving. In May 2026, Riverty, the fintech company belonging to Bertelsmann, announced that it had obtained an EU CRR banking licence in Luxembourg.

Its new bank began operations in July, supporting payment, credit and liquidity services across European markets. According to the company, its activities already serve more than 1,800 merchants and approximately 25 million unique customers across ten European markets.

Luxembourg’s banking sector is becoming more specialised

Employment growth does not mean banks are simply recreating the teams of the past.

The skills mix is changing.  Regulation, digitalisation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and increasingly complex cross-border activities are reshaping the capabilities financial institutions need.

The ABBL Annual Report 2025 highlights digital transformation, regulation and sustainability among the major issues shaping Luxembourg’s banking sector and its future competitiveness.

There are also signs of changing business dynamics in the latest financial results.

According to the CSSF, Luxembourg banks generated €2.56 billion in profit before provisions and taxes during the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 4.2% year-on-year

Net fee and commission income increased even faster, rising 6.5% compared with the first quarter of 2025

The combination of employment growth, new entrants and evolving banking activities has direct implications for Luxembourg’s talent market.

Which banking jobs are in demand in Luxembourg?

From our work with banks and financial services organisations in Luxembourg, we see recruitment needs becoming increasingly concentrated around functions that combine technical expertise, regulatory knowledge and a strong understanding of the local financial ecosystem.

These include:

  • Compliance and AML/KYC
  • Risk Management
  • Internal Audit
  • Regulatory Reporting
  • Finance and Controlling
  • Treasury
  • Corporate and Institutional Banking
  • Credit and Lending
  • Private Banking and Wealth Management
  • Operations and Transformation
  • Data, Technology and Cybersecurity

For many of these positions, previous banking experience remains important.

But employers are increasingly looking for something more specific: professionals capable of navigating Luxembourg’s regulatory environment while operating effectively within international, increasingly digital organisations.

This combination can considerably narrow the available candidate pool.

Banking recruitment in Luxembourg is becoming more competitive

The headline figure of 26,560 jobs is positive for Luxembourg’s financial centre.

For employers, however, employment growth also means greater competition for talent

Banks, asset managers, fintechs, payment companies, insurers and other financial institutions frequently recruit from overlapping pools of professionals.

A Compliance specialist with strong Luxembourg regulatory experience may be approached by several types of financial institutions.

The same applies to Risk professionals, experienced Relationship Managers, Treasury specialists and increasingly Data and Technology professionals with financial services expertise.

Luxembourg’s international labour market adds another layer of complexity. Employers are not competing exclusively with other institutions based in the Grand Duchy. Experienced candidates can consider opportunities across neighbouring markets and other major European financial centres.

For specialised banking positions, waiting for the right candidate to apply is therefore becoming an increasingly restrictive recruitment strategy.

Banking recruitment requires better market intelligence

This changing environment also affects the way banking recruitment needs to be approached. Before opening a position, employers increasingly need answers to several questions:

  • Does the profile actually exist in Luxembourg?
  • How many professionals have the required combination of skills?
  • Which institutions currently employ them?
  • What compensation is required to attract them?
  • Are those candidates open to moving?
  • Should the search extend beyond Luxembourg?

These questions are particularly important for strategic and highly specialised banking positions.

A job description defines what an organisation would ideally like to recruit.

Market intelligence determines whether that profile can realistically be found.

What banking employment growth means for employers

The latest figures provide a positive indication of the direction of Luxembourg’s banking sector, but they also suggest that recruitment strategies will need to evolve alongside it.

Three trends deserve particular attention.

  1. First, specialisation is increasing. As banking activities become more sophisticated, employers are looking for narrower combinations of technical, regulatory and commercial expertise.
  2. Second, competition increasingly extends beyond traditional banks. Fintechs, payment providers, investment firms and other financial institutions can target many of the same professionals.
  3. Third, passive candidates matter more. For highly specialised functions, some of the strongest candidates are already employed and are unlikely to respond to traditional job advertisements.

This makes market mapping, direct search and international sourcing increasingly important components of banking recruitment in Luxembourg.

Supporting banking recruitment in Luxembourg

At Morgan Philips Luxembourg, we work closely with banks and financial services organisations to understand how these talent pools are evolving.

Our recruitment specialists in Luxembourg combine knowledge of the Luxembourg banking market with direct search, talent mapping and international sourcing capabilities to identify professionals across Finance, Risk, Compliance, Audit, Operations, Front Office and other strategic banking functions.

Our role also involves helping employers understand the market before a recruitment begins: candidate availability, salary expectations, competing employers and the feasibility of the profile being sought.

As Luxembourg’s banking ecosystem continues to develop, that market intelligence will become increasingly valuable. 26,560 banking jobs is an encouraging figure for Luxembourg.

The more strategic question for employers is how to secure the skills behind the next phase of that growth.

EN FAQ Question #1Is Luxembourg’s banking sector still hiring in 2026?
EN FAQ Answer #1

Yes. According to the latest data from the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, credit institutions employed 26,560 people at the end of June 2026, confirming continued employment growth in the sector. New market entrants, evolving banking activities and growing needs in regulatory, financial and technology functions are contributing to demand for specialised banking professionals.

EN FAQ Question #2Which banking jobs are most in demand in Luxembourg?
EN FAQ Answer #2

Recruitment demand in Luxembourg is particularly visible across Compliance and AML/KYC, Risk Management, Internal Audit, Regulatory Reporting, Finance, Treasury, Corporate and Institutional Banking, Credit, Private Banking, Wealth Management, Operations, Transformation, Data, Technology and Cybersecurity. Demand is particularly strong for profiles combining sector expertise with knowledge of Luxembourg’s regulatory environment.

EN FAQ Question #3Why is banking recruitment challenging in Luxembourg?
EN FAQ Answer #3

Luxembourg has a highly specialised and international financial services market. Banks often compete with asset managers, investment firms, fintechs, insurers and payment companies for the same professionals. For certain roles, the pool of candidates combining relevant banking experience, regulatory expertise, technical skills and language capabilities can therefore be relatively limited.

EN FAQ Question #4How can banks attract specialised talent in Luxembourg?
EN FAQ Answer #4

Successful banking recruitment starts with a realistic understanding of the talent market. Employers should assess candidate availability, salary expectations, competing opportunities and the skills genuinely required for the position. For scarce profiles, direct search, talent mapping and international sourcing can provide access to professionals who may not be actively looking for a new role.

EN FAQ Question #5Why work with a banking recruitment agency in Luxembourg?
EN FAQ Answer #5

A specialised banking recruitment agency can provide employers with market intelligence and access to both active and passive candidates. Morgan Philips Luxembourg combines local banking market expertise, direct search and international sourcing to support recruitment across Finance, Risk, Compliance, Audit, Operations, Front Office and other strategic banking functions.
